Biographical Note

W. David Baird, born on July 8, 1939 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, was a member of the faculty of the Department of History at the University of Arkansas from 1968 to 1978. He returned to his home state to the History Department at Oklahoma State University from 1978-1988, when he was named Howard A. White Professor of History at Pepperdine University, Malibu, California; there he became Chair of the Division of the Humanities and Teacher Education in 1994. He has written nine books in Native American history as well as two works on the history of Oklahoma and numerous articles.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains research material collected by Baird in his studies of the American Indians, especially the Quapaw, for his book, The Quapaw Indians: A History of the Downstream People (Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 1980).

The research material includes Baird's correspondence with various private, public, and higher education institutions, societies, and organizations; handwritten and typewritten research notes; and photocopies of documents in a variety of formats, e.g., letters from the United States Office of Indian Affairs and the Quapaw Indian Agency; minutes of the Quapaw tribe meetings; reports; petitions; affidavits, testimonies, and other legal documents; lists of names; maps; magazine and newspaper articles; and published histories of Indian Tribes.
