Dorothy Stuck was born Dorothy Willard Davis on February 5, 1921 in Gravette, Arkansas to parents Floyd and Mimi Davis. She graduated from the University of Arkansas with her Bachelor’s degree in History in 1943, and she taught high school history from 1943 to 1946. In 1946, Dorothy married Howard Stuck. They had one son, Howard C. Stuck III. A few years later, Howard became ill, and Dorothy began working with the three newspapers that they owned, The Marked Tree Tribune, the Truman Democrat, and the Lepanto News Record. She became editor of the Marked Tree Tribune in 1950 and remained in that position until 1970. During that time Dorothy served as a representative in the 1969 Arkansas Constitutional Convention, and as director of the University of Arkansas Alumni Association. She also received the Arkansas Press Women of Achievement awards in 1965 and 1969. Following her resignation as editor of the Marked Tree Tribune in 1970, she moved to Dallas, Texas to serve as the Regional Director of the Office of Civil Rights for the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (DHEW). She held this position from 1970 to 1979. While in this position, she received the 1974 DHEW Distinguished Service Award. Dorothy and her long-time friend, Nan Snow, formed a small management and publications consulting firm, Stuck and Snow Resultants in 1981. And, in 1982, Dorothy and Nan, alongside several other women, founded another organization, the Willowe Institute. Dorothy was also one of the original members of the Arkansas Travelers for Bill Clinton’s 1993 presidential campaign. Dorothy and Nan co-wrote a biography about Senator J. William Fulbright’s mother, Roberta Fulbright, titled “Roberta, A Most Remarkable Fulbright.” The work was published in 1997. Nan Snow wrote another book in 2001 titled “Letters Home” that tells the story of Dorothy’s Brother, Floyd H. Davis, during his military service, and features many of the letters he wrote home while abroad. Dorothy was also honored with a Distinguished Alumni award from the University of Arkansas in 2008.
