The Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology began at the University of Arkansas in 1925 as part of the College of Agriculture. At that time, there was one department called Rural Economics and Sociology. The goal of this program was to teach students about rural health, farm finance, farm management and marketing, and extension education with regards to rural areas. In 1952, the two subjects were split into the separate majors of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology but merged back into the single department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology in 1964. In the 1970s, the program was expanded to include courses intended to prepare students for employment in the commercial agriculture and agribusiness industries. The 1980s saw expansion through an additional course of agricultural law as well as a new concentration in international and domestic agricultural marketing. The program shifted focus in the 1990s to put the main emphasis on agricultural business. In 1996, the Department of Agricultural Economics became the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness. The Rural Sociology program was moved to the School of Human Environmental Sciences to become a part of the Human Development, Family Sciences, and Rural Sociology major. In the 2011-2012 academic year, the major was changed to Human Development and Family Sciences; however, the college continued to offer a course on Rural Sociology.
