INFORMATION ABOUT THE COLLECTION

George Riley Kernodle (1907-88) was born in Camp Hill, Alabama. He attended Auburn University but received his B.S. from St. Lawrence University, Canton, New York in 1926.  Kernodle pursued further studies at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie-Mellon University) and studied drama at Columbia University, 1928-29.  He received his M.A. from the University of Chicago in 1930 and his Ph.D. from Yale University, 1937.  Kernodle's career encompassed lecturing and teaching; he taught at such institutions as the Riverdale School (Riverdale, New York, 1930), Ball State Teachers College (Muncie, Indiana, 1930-33), Cleveland College (Cleveland, Ohio, 1936-43), and the State University of Iowa (Iowa City, Iowa, 1945-50).  He was director and teacher at the University of Tulsa (Tulsa, Oklahoma, 1950-52) and at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville (1952-74).  Kernodle was the author of several scholarly works on theatre, focusing on theatre in the Renaissance, and of a new translation of Molière's comedy, The Miser.  Further information concerning Kernodle can be obtained from George R. Kernodle, Man of the Theatre, by Charmaine Beleele, University of Arkansas master's thesis, 1974.

The three scrapbooks that comprise the collection contain clippings, playbills, university catalogues, and broadsides concerning Kernodle's professional career.  A few photographs and post cards are included as well, but the emphasis of the collection is on playbills and clippings, specifically reviews, of the plays Kernodle directed.

The George R. Kernodle scrapbooks were donated to Special Collections by Portia Baker Kernodle (Kernodle's widow), of Fayetteville (Washington County), Arkansas, on June 2, 1988.

Prepared by Janet G. Tucker, Special Collections Division, University of Arkansas Libraries, Fayetteville, Arkansas, in June, 1988.
