Journal Articles

The University Libraries subscribe to a variety of databases and journals pertinent to GIS and other geosciences, including GeoRef and GeoScienceWorld.  Listed below are a few of the resources most useful for information on GIS, remote sensing and maps.

Printed Maps and Aerial Photographs

The majority of printed maps are maintained in the Map Collection on Level  4 of Mullins Library.  The collection includes U.S. Topographic Maps, Geologic Maps, and World Maps.  Arkansas maps are housed separately, including many historical maps, within the Special Collections Department on Level 1.

Aerial photographs of Arkansas are available only of scattered coverage and limited years, within the Special Collections Department
More information on the Libraries’ collection of printed maps and aerial photographs is available.

Sanborn Maps

The Sanborn Map Company was the primary American publisher of fire insurance maps for nearly 100 years. The maps provide block-by-block coverage of detailed information about historical buildings. Construction material is indicated, and information such as building function and locations of water and gas mains are available in some cases.

Special Collections has 8 color Sanborn maps of Fayetteville, for 1886, 1892, 1897, 1904, 1908, 1913, 1919, and 1930. Because of their size, fragility, and value, use of these originals is restricted. Use the digital collection as an alternative whenever possible.  We also have Sanborn Maps of Arkansas in black and white on two sets of microfilm in the Periodicals Room on Level 2.
