Biographical Note

The Warren Woman's Club of Warren, Bradley County, Arkansas, was founded as "The Mother's Club" on September 22, 1916. Its original purpose was to study child rearing through a five-year course based on Andrew Sloan Draper's Draper's Self Culture, a popular self-study guide of the era. Mrs. J.R. Wilson served as the group's first president, and the organization became a part of the General Federation of Women's Clubs that same year. In 1920, in order to accommodate those members without children, the club's name was changed to "Culture Club" In 1927, the club officially became the "Warren Woman's Club," and as such, continues to exist as a woman's organization promoting community service.

The General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) was formed in 1890 by Jane Cunningham Croly as an umbrella organization encompassing women's service organizations across the United States. The GFWC promotes service in the departments of art, conservation, education, home life, international affairs, and public affairs. The Warren Woman's Club exists as a chapter of the GFWC.

Noma Watkins joined the Warren Woman's Club in 1960, and served as president of the Pine Bluff District of the General Federation of Women's Clubs of Arkansas (GFWCA) from 1990-1992, as well as president of the Warren Woman's Club from 1996-1998. During this period, she also served as editor and historian for the Federation Speaks, the GFWCA newsletter.
