Scope and Content Note
The collection contains personal correspondence, including letters to Jewell Hughes Bushey from her lifelong friend and colleague, Jobelle Holcombe. There are also pertinent documents and records of Bushey's academic career at the University of Arkansas and Hunter. The photographs are primarily of Jewell Hughes Bushey and her family and they include photographs of the Hughes home in Fayetteville.

Biographical Note
Jewell Hughes Bushey was born in Fayetteville, Arkansas on March 13, 1896 and died in Fayetteville May 5, 1989. She was the daughter of James R. and Cora Stanley Hughes. Her siblings were: Harry L. (Pat) Hughes, Anna Hughes, Verdie Hughes Burtis, Leslie Claire Hughes, and Donald Hughes. The Hughes home was a landmark in Fayetteville at 220 W. North Street. It is no longer standing. JHB attended Fayetteville public schools from 1901- 1911. In 1915 she received an A.B. Degree from the University of Arkansas. In 1916 she was awarded an A.M. Degree from the University of Missouri. In 1924 she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Ph.D. Degree from the University of Chicago. She did further graduate study at Columbia University and the University of California. JHB taught mathematics at the University of Arkansas from 1918 until 1930 rising to the rank of Associate Professor. In 1930 she accepted a position at Hunter College in New York City. She attained the rank of Professor and served as the Chairman of Hunter's Mathematics Department. In 1966 the Jewell Hughes Bushey Scholarship for proficiency in mathematics was established at Hunter by the mathematics honorary group Pi Mu Epsilon. JHB served with distinction in professional organizations including the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, and the American Association of University Professors. She published numerous articles in educational and scholarly journals. She was an active faculty member at Hunter, participating in the work of many committees. She was Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Faculty from 1943-1950. She was described by her peers at Hunter as an inspiring teacher with a natural ability for administrative work. She retired from Hunter in 1966.
JHB was married to Joseph Hobart Bushey, a Professor of Statistics at Hunter. When he retired in 1972 the couple moved to Fayetteville where he died November 25, 1976.
The University of Arkansas conferred the degree of Doctor of Laws upon JHB in 1949. President Lewis Webster Jones wrote, "The University of Arkansas honors you/ for you have brought honor to it."

The Jewell Hughes Bushey Papers were donated to Special Collections by Clifton King of Fayetteville, Arkansas, on July 26, 1990.
