Scope and Content Note

Typescript of transcribed oral history interview of Zula Zanzibar Deeter by Esther B. Raun. The interview was conducted in fall 1978; the transcript was completed in 1987, and includes a foreward and postscript by Raun, as well as a topical index. Topics include cars, Civilian Conservation Corps camps, childbirth and child rearing, clothing, the Great Depression, farming, food, illnesses and medical care, religion, social life, and education.

Biographical Note

Zula Zanzibar Deeter (1891-1996) was a resident of Arkansas' Petit Jean Mountain. She was born March 13, 1891, to Agnes Elizabeth Bennett and Addison Walker. On October 16, 1910, she married Daniel Leory Deeter and moved to Petit Jean Mountain; the couple had nine children. Deeter passed away January 26, 1996, at age 104, and is buried in Petit Jean Mountain Cemetery.
