Biographical Note

The Cooperative Extension Service is an agency for rural development administered jointly by the University of Arkansas, the United States Department of Agriculture, and the various county governments in the state of Arkansas. First organized in 1914 by authority of the Smith-Lever Act passed by the U.S. Congress, the Cooperative Extension Service combined programs of the Department of Agriculture with extension work carried on by the University of Arkansas. Initially the organization was known as Agricultural Extension Service, but in 1968 the name changed to the Cooperative Extension Service. The organization also sponsors 4-H clubs, home demonstration clubs, and assumes the duties of public education in the fields of agriculture and home economics.

Scope and Content Note

Much of the printed material has been removed for separate cataloging in the Arkansas Collection or to include with serials previously cataloged. The topical files were created by the organization's administrative headquarters in Little Rock, Arkansas. A wide variety of materials such as reports, memorandum, printed ephemera and photographs were gathered by Extension Service personnel into Folders bearing extremely broad subject headings. The arrangement of the topical Folders as described herein preserves the original labels, although some duplication has been eliminated and extremely thick files have been subdivided.

Arrangement of the Papers

The records have been arranged in eight series by subject.

  1. County agent narrative and statistical reports
  2. County development plans
  3. Historical appraisal of extension work
  4. Gene Word research papers
  5. 4-H Club brochures
  6. Printed ephemera
  7. Topical files
  8. Arkansas Extension Service Personnel Photographs,

Detailed Description of the Collection

The following contains a detailed list of the materials in the collection

series I: County Agent Narrative and Statistical Reports,

1966-1969

Boxes 1-2

Typewritten and handwritten reports submitted by county extension agents and extension home economists describing the organization, accomplishments, and future goals of programs conducted within their jurisdiction. The Folders have been arranged alphabetically by county with the exception of the last which contains two reports submitted by Area Resource Development agents whose districts included more than one county.

Letters, memoranda, reports, surveys, application forms, photographs, and printed materials pertaining to a wide variety of Extension Service concerns. The material in these files was apparently added to over the period of many years. Of particular interest are Folders documenting the Master Farmer applications of the 1930s, the "negro work" of the Extension Service in the 1950s and 1960s, and the Pig and Poultry Club program which was apparently started independent of the Extension Service in 1914. The Folders have been alphabetically arranged by the titles assigned by the Extension Service and, in the case of exceptionally fat Folders, subdivided by document type.
