Scope and Content Note
The papers in this accession consist mostly of memorabilia collected by Hays and his wife, Marion, documenting Hays's career and numerous speaking engagements. Included are: a diary, letters, and manuscripts written by Hays, along with essays and letters written or collected by his son, Steele, his wife, Marion, or his biographer, Cyril Bryant, 1919-1984; awards and certificates presented to Hays, 1916-1982; Scrapbooks and scrapbook materials which include printed articles both written by and pertaining to Hays, political cartoons, and memorabilia, 1939-1991; photographs, motion pictures, and sound recordings, mostly of Hays speaking or attending various political, religious, and social functions, 1918-1982.

Biographical Note
In addition to his service in state and national politics, Brooks Hays was an active and devout Baptist, serving as the president of the Southern Baptist Convention from 1957 to 1959. He wrote four books: This World: A Christian's Workshop (1958), A Southern Moderate Speaks (1959), A Hotbed of Tranquility (1968), and Politics Is My Parish (1981).

Materials are arranged in four series. All series have been arranged chronologically.
Series 1. Diary, letters and manuscripts, 1919-1984.
Series 2. Certificates and awards, 1947-1982.
Series 3. Scrapbooks and scrapbook material, 1939-1982.
Series 4. Photographs, motion pictures, and sound recordings, 1918-1982.
Acquisition Information
The Brooks Hays Papers Addenda (MC 1164) is the third accession of Brooks Hays materials received by Special Collections, and was donated in 1992 by Hays's widow, Marion Prather Hays, and William E. Bell of Washington, D. C.
