Biographical Note

The Black Studies Program at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville was established in the fall of 1969 to educate students on the history, culture, and problems of African Americans. Dr. Elaine McNeil, emeritus professor of Sociology, served as chairman of the Black Studies Program Advisory committee, created in 1969 to supervise the program. The Black Studies Major was available in 1969, and it was also an interdepartmental major through the Anthropology, Economics, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology departments. In 1977, the program changed to only an interdepartmental major or minor. Officially changed to African-American Studies in 1992, the program remains the same today.
