Scope and Content Note
These papers include three notebooks which Mrs. Smith compiled. One contains her resume and photographs of her landscape designs, as well as photographs of other landscape designs. A second contains articles which she wrote, published in various magazines dating from 1939 to 1987. A third contains materials pertaining to her book Trees in a Winter Landscape. Also included is the plaque she received which names her a Fellow of the Garden Writers Association of America. A folder containing original sketches, drawings, and designs by Mrs. Smith is housed in the map case in the Special Collections Reading Room.
Copies of Mrs. Smith's three books can be found in the circulating collection of the library.

Biographical Note
Alice Upham Smith was born in Duluth, Minnesota, in 1908. She attended Carleton College (1927-1928); University of Minnesota (1929); University of Edinburgh (1930); and Cambridge School of Domestic Architecture and Landscape Architecture (1931-1932). She married Eastman Smith in 1933; the couple moved to Columbia, Missouri, where both taught at the University of Missouri. She established a private practice in landscape architecture, working on residential, commercial, and educational projects. She served as landscape consultant for Stephens College and Christian College, as well as on the committee to landscape Columbia public schools. Smith moved to Mountain Home, Arkansas, in the early 1960's, where she continued her practice.
Smith is the author and illustrator of three books: Trees in a Winter Landscape (New York, Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1969), Patios, Terraces, Decks and Roof Gardens (New York, Hawthorn Books, 1969), and A Distinctive Setting for Your House (Garden City, New York, Doubleday,1973). She also contributed numerous articles to the New York Times Sunday Garden Page, Flower and Garden, House and Garden, Nursery Business, Landscape Industry, Horticulture, and Woman's Day. She was named a Fellow of the Garden Writers Association of America in 1984 and was a member of the Ozark Writers League.

Acquisition Information
Papers pertaining to Alice Upham Smith's career as a landscape architect and writer were donated to Special Collections by Mrs. Smith on April 7, 1992.
