Biographical Note

William Orville Douglas was a Supreme Court judge from 1939 to 1975. Douglas visited the Buffalo River in 1962 at the invitation of Neil Compton and the Ozark Society on a canoe trip. After the trip, Douglas became an advocate for the designation of the Buffalo River as the first National River in America.
