Biographical Note

Minnie E. Atteberry, a native of Zack, Searcy County, Arkansas, lived on a farm with her son, Lawrence Harry Gardner, and two grandchildren, LeRoy and Christie Marie Rea, the children of her deceased daughter.

Scope and Content Note

The papers contain diaries, correspondence consisting mostly of Atteberry's draft letters to her relatives and other individuals, and a small number of other papers such as a life insurance policy, a mortgage, personal property assessments, a bill of sale, and others.

Atteberry started keeping her diaries in 1934. The early entries for the years 1934-1935 are very short, usually about her son's work schedule and the weather. Her daily accounts of events become more detailed over time. By 1954, Atteberry evidently kept a separate record of her own daily activities, as well as a record of those of her son Lawrence, with few exceptions when he wrote the diary himself. Both diaries are written in the third person.
