Scope and Content Note

The records of the Arkansas Committee primarily consist of photocopies members made of public documents such as court records and depositions, along with newspaper and magazine clippings. Some original letters from persons interested in the work of the Arkansas Committee are also included. Sound cassette interviews with various parties conducted by Committee members and video cassette tapes of Committee hearings and productions are also included. The records have been inventoried by file folder titles which correspond to the topic or material type of the file's contents. Sound and video cassette titles listed are those created by the Arkansas committee. Sound cassettes have been removed from the inventoried boxes for separate storage.

Audio cassette tapes in Master Cassette Box are restricted for preservation reasons; researchers should use access copies in User Cassette Box.

Use Information

Three sound cassette tapes, consisting of interviews conducted by Mark Swaney with June and Joel Hanley, have been removed from the collection and will remain unavailable for research use until their review five years from the donation date.

Use of originals is restricted for preservation reasons. Access copies are available for use.

Biographical Note

The Arkansas Committee was a registered student organization with the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, concerned with investigating allegations of corruption in government. Of particular interest to the group were the Iran-Contra scandal and the possible involvement of government officials at all levels.

Acquisition Information

Letters, sound and video cassette tapes, and photocopies of public records, newspaper articles, court depositions and miscellaneous documents gathered or created by the Arkansas Committee were donated to the Special Collections Department by Mark Swaney on June 1, 1993.

NOTE: File 13, box 2, "Bill Holmes material" was added to the collection on April 8, 1994 after its donation by Mark Swaney. For security considerations every sheet in the entire collection was individually numbered on July 1, 1994. These sheet numbers have been added to the folder listings in the following inventory.
