Scope and Content Note

The collection pertains primarily to three generations of the Hanks family: Green P. and Fanny Hanks, Wilbur G. and Martha Hanks, and Ora Joe Hanks of Johnson, Arkansas. Green P. Hanks (1838, Boonsboro, Arkansas-1929) served in the US army during the Civil War and was honorably discharged in 1865. Wilbur G. Hanks (1870-1931) was justice of the peace in Johnson, Arkansas. Ora Joe Hanks graduated from the Fayetteville, Arkansas, High School in 1922 and received the Teachers' Course certificate from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1928. Hanks taught mostly in the Fort Smith and Johnson, Arkansas, public schools.

The papers contain correspondence, Civil War discharge papers, financial papers, tax receipts, warranty deeds, insurance policies, school certificates and diplomas, licenses, Ora Joe Hanks's diary, a scrapbook of handwritten poetry given to Ora as a birthday present, a notebook/travelogue which Ora kept during her family's trip from Arkansas to Illinois to the Hanks family reunion, picture postcards of Fayetteville, Arkansas, family studio portraits and photographs, and other family documents. Several of the family portraits and some of the unidentified pictures were taken by the Fayetteville, Arkansas, photographers, such as B.E. Grabill, Sowder, and C.E. Watton.

Biographical Note

Green P. Hanks (1838, Boonsboro, Arkansas-1929) served in the US army during the Civil War and was honorably discharged in 1865.

Wilbur G. Hanks (1870-1931) was justice of the peace in Johnson, Arkansas.

Ora Joe Hanks graduated from the Fayetteville, Arkansas, High School in 1922 and received the Teachers' Course certificate from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1928. Hanks taught mostly in the Fort Smith and Johnson, Arkansas, public schools. Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Thomas are aunt and uncle to Wilbur G. Hanks' children.

Acquisition Information

The Wilbur G. Hanks Family Papers were donated to the Special Collections Division by T.V. Hilt of Rogers, Arkansas, on November 1, 1993. Additional materials (Box 1, Folders 12-16) were received by Special Collections circa 1995-2015.
