Biographical Note

Gus Albright was known around the state of Arkansas as an out-doors columnist for the Arkansas Gazette and as a college basketball and football official in the former Southwest Conference. Albright was born January 24, 1915. His father was a loan officer for the local bank during the Great Depression. Albright was impacted during this period of his life by watching his father sell their land and property to help finance loans for local residents while at the same time other banks were defaulting. The sense of responsibility and duty that he learned from his father guided Albright into the Army during World War II. He later retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserves. Following his time in the military, Gus Albright chose a career in radio, as a journalist, and developed into an avid conservationist. Albright began his career in journalism in the early 1950s with radio spots featuring hunting, fishing, and conservation issues. He became a regular contributor to the Arkansas Gazette as their lead outdoors columnist. Albright lobbied the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission tirelessly for preservation of the Cache River and White River, spending his forty year career campaigning for environmental protection and conservation. Gus Albright died of a heart attack in Hot Springs, Arkansas on August 5, 2005 at the age of ninety.
