Historical Sketch

Camp Ouachita is located in Perry County Arkansas on Lake Sylvia in the Winona Ranger District of the Ouachita National Forest. The camp was built between 1936-1940 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Works Progress Administration (WPA). There are seven distinct building types on the land and the structures were used by the Arkansas branch of the Girl Scouts for America from 1937 until 1977. The camp was closed down because of lack of potable water. In 1990 Camp Ouachita received recognition on the National Register of Historic Places because of its significance by association with the CCC and early Girl Scouts of America organization.

In 1994-1995 the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service in Little Rock began a feasibility study of Camp Ouachita to evaluate the tourist/visitor attraction of the site. Further study was conducted since then in 1999.
