This correspondence consists of typed and photocopied letters and receipts between Gwinnett and Mary Jane Hines Couch, as well as additional letters to and from Mary Jane's mother Nancy and brother T.G.

Biographical Note

Gwinnett Couch was the son of William and Rebecca (Pierce) Couch. He was born January 12, 1825 in Georgia, died March 4, 1865 in Columbia County Arkansas. On November 28, 1850 in Upson, Georgia he married Alice R. E. Crawford. She was born July 27, 1832, died May 25, 1861. Together they had two sons, Sanford O. and John Peter, and one daughter, Mary Alice. After the death of his first wife, Gwinnett married Mary Jane Hines December 15, 1861. They had one son, Irvin Henry and one daughter, Nettie Viola. Gwinnett was a farmer and calvary lieutenant during the Civil War. He was also the great-uncle of Harvey Couch who brought utilities to Arkansas through his telephone, power, and railroad ventures.

Mary Jane Griffith was born November 4, 1828, died October. 16, 1915. She married Thomas W. Hines on September 17. 1846. The couple had one son and two daughters all of which died before the age of two. Thomas Hines died February 18, 1859. Mary Jane married Gwinnett December 15. 1861. After Gwinnett died she married Archibald Robert McKindley on December 10, 1867. Together they had one daughter, Willie Exah, born January. 24, 1870.
