Scope and Content Note

The collection contains typescripts of two memoirs by Arkansan James Madison Hudson, one covering his service in the Confederate army, and one covering his experiences of Reconstruction in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

In addition, the collection includes examples of Confederate currency, including Arkansas state treasury warrants, Confederate States of America banknotes, and local scrip.

Biographical Note

James Madison Hudson was born October 5, 1842, in Shelby County, Tennessee, to Nancy Jane Gillespie and James Asbury Hudson.

During the Civil War, he volunteered with Captain Taliaferros's Company G, 2nd Arkansas Infantry, in 1861. He was wounded in battle at Shiloh, Murfreesboro, and Kennesaw Mountain, before being furloughed. Following the war, Hudson moved to Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where he was involved in banking, farming, and the grocery industry. He served in the Arkansas state legislature from 1884-1888, and was Pine Bluff's postmaster from 1893-1895.

He passed away February 7, 1925 in Pine Bluff.

The James Madison Hudson Papers were donated to the Special Collections Department by Joseph M. Hudson of Leavenworth, Kansas, on October 21, 1998 and May 12, 2000.
