Biographical Note

The Arkansas Biography Project was launched in 1991, and completed in 2000 with the publication of Arkansas Biography: A Collection of Notable Lives by the University of Arkansas Press. Nancy A. Williams served as editor, assisted by Jeannie Whayne as associate editor. The project’s advisory committee included Willard B. Gatewood, Ethel Simpson, Jeannie Whayne, Tom Dillard, Ann Wilson, David Edmark, Jo Bennett, and Eugenia Donovan. The project received contributions from more than 170 authors. Arkansas Biography was modeled on the Dictionary of American Biography. Its guidelines dictated that no living person was to be included. Other guidelines included a broad definition of “Arkansan” to include people born in Arkansas as well as people not born in Arkansas but who did “something worthy of note” in the state. The contents span the state’s history from the earliest European exploration to the present, including biographies of Spaniard Hernando de Soto and native Americans Casqui and Pacha. The latest year of death for a person included in the book was 1999.
