Scope and Content Note

Materials consist of certificates, membership cards, and photocopies of France’s will, obituary, and early writings. This addendum to the Isabel France Papers (MC 1407) also includes manuscripts of Frances’ writings, photographs documenting her personal life, and newspaper clippings.

Biographical Note

Isabel Huckleberry was born in 1898 in Crawford County, Arkansas. In 1915 she graduated from Van Buren, Arkansas, High School, obtained a teaching certificate, and taught in the Van Buren public school system. Huckleberry later attended the University of Arkansas. Known as the "writing woman of the Ozarks," Huckleberry authored the Hills of Home column in the Arkansas Gazette for 25 years. On December 23, 1933, she married Owen W. France, a stock man from Mountainburg. Together the couple had two daughters. Isabel Huckleberry France died, in Fort Smith, at the age of sixty-five on February 22, 1963.
