Scope and Content Note

The material in the collection, pertaining to the life of America Hamilton Mattix, comprises family and official correspondence, a diary (ca 1914-1928), teacher licenses and contracts (ca 1924-1928), loose pages with pasted newspaper/magazine clippings mostly of poems with a few handwritten notes, Home Economics class notes, a photocopy of Mattix's 1915 class picture, a photograph of Valley View Hall of Honor Inductee plaque, and other papers. The collection further contains papers of Esther Mattix Wilson (America Hamilton Mattix's sister-in-law ?) as well as papers of Mattix's brother, Charles G. Hamilton.

Biographical Note

America Hamilton Mattix (Sep 27, 1896-Sep 27, 1982) attended the State Agricultural School in Jonesboro from 1913 to 1914 and received her first teacher's license for Craighead County on September 18, 1914. She started her teaching career in 1915 by taking a position at Weiner, Arkansas. In 1916, Mattix continued with her education at the Teacher's Normal, State Agricultural School. Later, she also attended the University of California in summer of 1923 and took correspondence courses at the University of Arkansas in 1944 and 1945. Mattix spent most of her teaching years (1940s to 1960s) as a substitute teacher at the Valley View School, teaching all eight grades and all subjects. For her outstanding service and dedication, America Hamilton Mattix was inducted into the Valley View School "Hall of Honor" in 1999.
