Cincinnati Cumberland Presbyterian Church Records

 Collection
Identifier: MC 1484

Scope and Content Note

The volume contains the minutes of the church council meetings from 1870 to 1909. It also contains the membership rosters, lists of deacons and priests, marriages, and adult and infant baptisms from 1870 to 1909; these lists were updated through 1919 in the case of members leaving. The meeting minutes record when members joined or left the church. They also document occasional hearings on members who engaged in "unchristian" behavior, such as public intoxication or dancing. The council decided whether the members would be removed from the communion rolls, removed from the church, or acquitted.

Historical Sketch

Reverend J. R. Earle established the Cincinnati Presbyterian Church of Cincinnati, Arkansas, in 1870. Cincinnati lies near the Oklahoma-Arkansas border in western Washington County, Arkansas south of Siloam Springs and west of Farmington. The church, from its creation, affiliated itself with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, an offshoot of the United States Presbyterian Church (USPC), which broke off from the USPC in the early 1800s when it endorsed the ordaining of uneducated ministers to preach in rural pioneering areas. The congregation is believed to have existed prior to 1860, but was broken up by the Civil War and did not reorganize until 1870. At that time it met in the local schoolhouse, but in 1886 the church built a new building which remained the house of worship at least through 1941. Sometime between 1909 and 1941 the church rejoined the Presbyterian Church of the United States of America and was listed in 1941 as such in the Works Progress Administration Historical Records Survey.
