Harold Andrew Dulan was born to Thomas F. and Mame F. Corson Dulan on June 28, 1911 in Bridgeton, New Jersey. Growing up Dulan worked as a cabin boy on a merchant ship. Dulan later moved to Austin, Texas and enrolled in the University of Texas, where he received his B.B.A (1936), his accounting MBA (1937) and his finance Ph.D. in 1946. He married Bess Gun on February 31, 1946 and together they had three daughters. Dulan worked as a public accountant and became part of the faculty at Texas A&M College and Southern Methodist University. Dulan took a position in the department of finance for the College of Business Administration at the University of Arkansas in 1946 and served until he retired in 1982. Dulan co-founded Participating Annuity Life Insurance Company (PALIC) with University of Arkansas Law Professor E.J. Ball and University of Arkansas graduate Lewis Callison in 1954. PALIC is credited with being the nation’s first commercial variable annuity life insurance company. After selling PALIC, Dulan began a career as a consultant in capital formation, economic growth, and monetary theory. In 1981 his former students at the University of Arkansas endowed the Dulan Finance Chair in Capital Formation in the College of Business Administration. Blue Cross/Blue Shield Insurance Company honored Dulan as an ageless hero in 2000. Dulan earned honorary membership in to Beta Gamma Sigma, Beta Alpha Psi, and Sigma Iota Epsilon Fraternity. Harold Dulan died July 12, 2001, in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
