Biographical Note

Orville Hall, Sr. was born in Freeport, Illinois on November 6, 1903 to George W. and F. Jennie Hall. He graduated from Springdale High School in 1921, and from the University of Arkansas in 1925 with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. On September 21, 1929, he married Jane Haigh, with whom he had a son, Orville J. Hall, Jr..

Hall continued his studies at the University of Minnesota, where he received his Master of Science in 1928 and a Ph.D. in 1949. He also briefly studied at Harvard University during the 1929-1930 school year. He began teaching at the University of Arkansas in the College of Agriculture in 1928, transferring to the College of Business Administration in 1947, frequently publishing on topics relating to Arkansas agriculture and logging. He was a member of the ROTC while attending the University of Arkansas and served as a teacher of military tactics during World War II at Fort Benning, Georgia and Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Hall was also a member of Alpha Kappa Psi and Lambda Chi Alpha fraternities, Washington Masonic Lodge No. One, and the Fayetteville Lions Club, of which he was president in 1950-1951. He attended Central Methodist Church and was a member of the board that arranged for the land purchase and construction of Fayetteville General Hospital. He died Wednesday, September 27, 1961 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Scope and Content Note

The Orville Hall, Sr. Papers comprise papers relating to his military service, education, and employment, as well as materials from the travels of Orville and his wife, Jane Haigh Hall.

The collection includes personal papers, correspondence, family photographs, education and professional work, vitae, and personal writings/publications, as well as papers relating to Hall’s involvement with the Fayetteville Lions Club. In addition the collection contains materials concerning his involvement with the military, most importantly the proceedings from the case concerning his retirement benefits and a large collection of World War II military manuals on varying topics.
