Biographical Note

The Friends of Lake Wedington formed a non-profit in 1988 made up of volunteers with the goal to preserve, maintain, and restore the Lake Wedington Recreation area. The primary agenda of the group was to make the facilities accessible to disabled people. Wheelchair ramps are featured on the site, an accessible fishing pier and nature trail were developed, and accessible campsites and bathrooms are among the many improvements the Friends have accomplished. Another priority of the group was the restoration and renovation of the buildings on the grounds. The Friends of Lake Wedington established all of the original cabins to the National Register of Historic Places. The Lake Wedington Lodge, Chinquapin Hollow Pavilion, Wiggans House, and Lake Wedington gazebo were all restored and renovated within ten years. The Friends of Lake Wedington relies upon organizations, businesses, and individuals to volunteer their time, labor, money, and resources to complete these projects. The Friends work closely with the United States Forest Service and, for a time, the University of Arkansas took over management of Lake Wedington facilities from 2001 until 2007 when USFS resumed administrative control of the park. The continual maintenance issues, repairs, and safety concerns were a constant topic for active Friends of Lake Wedington board members. Discussion of outreach, publicity, and development of tourism traffic increased with the addition of the museum. The planning and completion of projects that offered wheelchair accessibility to the lake, lodge, pavilions, trail, and three of the historic cabins were successfully implemented by the Friends of Lake Wedington.
