Biographical Note

Almeda Riddle (1898-1986) of Lone Pine, Arkansas, was one of the most recognized Arkansas folk musicians, having received a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. She recorded several albums of traditional ballads for major record labels including Vanguard Records and performed at numerous festivals including the Newport Folk Festival. She was discovered by John Quincy Wolf, Arkansas folklorist, and brought to the attention of Alan Lomax, Mary Celestia Parler-Randolph, and numerous other traditional ballad collectors and performers such as Mike Seeger and Joan Baez.

Scope and Content Note

Dr. Robert Cochran, professor of English and director of the Center for Arkansas and Regional Studies, collected this correspondence regarding arrangements for Almeda Riddle to visit the University of Arkansas and perform for his folklore class.
