Historical Note
The University Senate Committee on Student Affairs first appears in the University Catalog for the 1914 academic year. This committee continued until the 1945 academic year. It was known periodically as the Committee on Student Affairs and Convocations.
The Division of Student Affairs was not established until September 1955. The division was led by the Dean of Students and supported by the Dean of Men and Dean of Women with additional support staff. The offices of Dean of Men and Dean of Women date back much farther than the Division of Student Affairs. The first Dean of Women was appointed in 1911, and the first Dean of Men was appointed in 1923.
The Division of Student Affairs was charged with meeting the out-of-class needs of the students, including counseling and advising, food services, housing, student activities, student aid, and the Student Union. The Dean of Students was given the additional title of Vice President of Student Affairs beginning in the 1973 academic year. As the University’s organization and needs changed, this position title changed as follows: Vice President for Student Services (1977-1982), Vice Chancellor for Student Services (1983-1999), Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (2000-2010), and Vice Provost for Student Affairs and Dean of Students (2011-2013). When the position changed to Vice Chancellor, it was separated from the Dean of Students position. In 2011, as the position changed to Vice Provost, it was once more combined with the Dean of Students. In 2013, the Division of Student Affairs still manages campus dining, housing, student activities, and the Arkansas Union. In addition, the division manages many other services to students, including the University Career Development Center and the Pat Walker Health Center.
This collection is made up of event materials for the dedications of five separate residence halls on campus: W.E. “Bill” Darby Hall, Roberta Fulbright Hall, Annie D. Futrall Hall, Stella Palmer and Henry G. Hotz Hall, and Alan S. Humphreys Hall.
