Scope and Content Note

The letter consists of four pages written in ink on one sheet. When it was purchased it was split along the folds and has been encapsulated in a mylar folder.

In it, Albert Hemenway wrote to his sister on December 24, 1864 from a camp, “White River, Ark.” describing his Christmas dinner of fish, “sody crackers”, and “coffy” and commented “ i tel you itt wount do for soldiers to have to menny good things to onse.”

Biographical Note

It appears possible that Albert Hemenway was a member of the New York 161st Regiment Infantry, which moved to the mouth of White River, Ark., November 1, and was on duty there until February, 1865. The unit mustered out November 12, 1865.
