Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of research compiled by T. T. Tyler Thompson for the publication of his book, The University of Arkansas Razorback Band: A History, 1874-2004 (Fayetteville: University of Arkansas Press, 2004), as well as drafts of his text.

Materials include pre-game and half-time media guides; miscellaneous band programs; a collection of newspaper clippings, photographs, and notes; submission drafts of The University of Arkansas Razorback Band: A History, 1874-2004; and a cd-rom containing the text.

Biographical Note

T. T. Tyler Thompson is the author of The University of Arkansas Razorback Band: A History, 1874-2004 (Fayetteville: University of Arkansas Press, 2004). Thompson was a member of the Razorback band from 1967 to 1971. He graduated from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville with a Bachelor of the Arts in chemistry and German. He later received a Bachelor of Science and doctorate in optometry from the University of Houston College of Optometry. Since 1982, he has resided in Little Rock, Arkansas, as a practicing optometrist.

The University of Arkansas Razorback band, nicknamed "The Best in Sight and Sound,"was founded as the Cadet Corps Band in 1874, making it one of the oldest collegiate bands in the United States. In 1947, the Cadet Corps Band divided into three bands: the football band, the concert band, and the ROTC band. In 1956, under the direction of Dr. Richard A. "Doc" Worthington, the football band officially became the University of Arkansas Razorback Marching Band, and adopted the name AMarching Razorbacks.@ In 2006, the Marching Razorbacks were awarded the Sudler trophy, the highest honor awarded to a collegiate marching band.

As of 2008, the Razorback band program was under the direction of Timothy Gunter, and consisted of 325 members. It encompassed not only the Marching Razorbacks, but also three concert bands, two HogWild basketball pep bands, and a HogWild volleyball pep band.
