Biographical Note

Elaine Ogden was born December 10, 1913 in Waterbury, Connecticut, and pursued a scholarly career in sociology at the University of Chicago and the University of Kansas. Her master's thesis, "The Social Orientation of the Society Girl" was mentioned in Time magazine in July 1938. She joined the University of Arkansas faculty along with her husband, Gordon McNeil, in 1954, and became very active in desegregation, as well as African American and Women's Studies. She became the first director of the UA Black Studies committee in 1969. She died in Fayetteville, Washington County, Arkansas on December 29, 2004.

The collection contains personal and scholarly documents pertaining to the life and career of Elaine Ogden McNeil, particularly her scholarly work and involvement in desegregation, as well as photographs and newspaper clippings.
