Biographical Note

The Delphian Club of Forrest City, St. Francis County, Arkansas, a women’s group devoted to literary study and research, was organized in 1920. Starting in 1930, the annual dues paid by active and associate members were placed in a student loan fund, the first such loan being awarded in 1930. Membership was long limited to 50 active members and officers served two-year terms. The club met twice a month from September through May each year at the Forrest City Public Library. The group was one of the oldest non-federated clubs in Arkansas. The status of the club after 1964 remains unknown.

The Forrest City club followed the lead, however, of the National Delphian Society, which encouraged adult education in literature, music, travel and philosophy through regular meetings and corresponding performances and lectures. The national organization also urged more formal learning through courses in ancient history and literature, drama, art, modern literature, poetry and music.
