Scope and Content Note

The collection consist of letters written by Drury Connally to his wife, Ann Kilgore Connally in Sulphur Springs. These letters pertain to his activities as a member of Johnson's Texas Spy Company in Arkansas and Tennessee, particularly his campaign around east Arkansas and Chickamauga and Chattanooga, Tennessee, guerilla warfare, civilian life, and various Civil War military engagements.

Biographical Note

Drury Connally, son of Drury M. Connally, was born in 1829. Connally married Ann Kilgore, daughter of Willis and Isabel Kilgore, in 1852 in Rusk County, Texas. They had two daughters Millie and Sallie. During the Civil War, Connally enlisted in Alfred Johnson's Texas Spy Company. Captain Alfred Johnson's Company was a part of Cavalry Unattached Texas Volunteers that was reorganized for the unexpired term of three years from September 1, 1862. Connally survived the Civil War and died in 1876 and is buried in Sulphur Springs, Texas along with his family.

The Drury Connally Letters were donated to the Special Collections Department, University of Arkansas Libraries, on January 12, 1994 by the Harold B. Simpson Center in Hillsboro, Texas.
