Historical Note

The Arkansas Extension Homemaker Council was established in 1912 in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The Homemaker Councils are affiliated with the Cooperative Extension Service, University of Arkansas’ adult education program in agriculture and family and consumer service. Over the years, the organization has operated under many names. The original name, when the State Council organized in 1912, was Home Demonstration Clubs. In 1966, the name changed to Arkansas Extension Homemakers Council. At the Annual State Meeting on June 3, 1992, the name was changed to Arkansas Association for Family and Community Education. Two years later in 1994, the organization changed their name back to Arkansas Extension Homemakers Council Inc.

The activities of the organization have changed over the years. During the home demonstration era, the County Home Demonstration Agent traveled throughout the county and presented educational demonstrations primarily in the home. With the name change in 1966, the County Extension agents made a transition in their role with the organization by training local leaders to providing educational programs to their communities. In 1992, the organization broadened their focus to include outreach programs geared toward both families and communities. Currently, the Arkansas Extension Homemaker Council’s mission is to empower individuals and families to improve the quality of their lives though continuing education, leadership development, and community service.

The Habberton Extension Homemakers Club centered around the community of Habberton, Washington County, Arkansas. It is one of twenty-six active extension homemakers clubs in the county.
