Biographical Note

The collection consists of letters written by Richard C. Huber, a soldier in the U.S. Army during World War II. Because of his poor eyesight, he remained stateside during the war. He first served at Camp Robinson near Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas. Named for Senator Joseph T. Robinson (d. 1937), the camp served as a training center for "Branch Immaterial" and medical replacements during World War II. At Robinson, Huber served with the 82nd Battalion, Company D, during March 1943 and in the 76th Battalion, Company D, from April to June 1943. By October 1944 he had been transferred to the Service Company of the 64th AIB, which was based at Camp Chaffee near Fort Smith. Camp Chaffee functioned as both a military training installation and a prisoner of war camp during World War II. In January 1945, Huber was transferred to New York.
