Historical Sketch

The ledger contains the records for the Conway, Faulkner County, Arkansas post office maintained by postmaster Charles W. Cox during the years 1885-1893. Cox was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1854, the fourth of five children born to John T. and Catherine (Rowen) Cox, of Ohio, who moved from Ohio to Indiana shortly after marrying. Later the family moved to Coffey County, Kansas, near the community of Ottumwa. John T. Cox afterward became a prominent politician, designing the Kansas state coat-of-arms, and serving as secretary of the United States Senate Committee on Public Lands in Washington, D.C. Charles W. Cox grew up in Kansas and was educated at public schools in Ottumwa and Burlington. He attended the University of Lawrence, Kansas, and in 1875 he entered the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, graduating in 1877. He began his law practice in Conway in 1878. In 1879, he established the Log Cabin newspaper, selling it one year later. In 1882, he married Carrie Bruce of Georgia. The couple had three sons, John Bruce, Quinn Cazad, and Charles Herbert. A Republican in politics, Cox was appointed Conway postmaster in 1889. He was also elected a special chancellor of the chancery court. The date of his death is unknown.
