During her membership, Heard was elected as the president and song leader in the Keiser 4-H Club, vice-president and song leader of the 4-H County Council, and the state song leader. In 1951, Heard attended the National 4-H Congress in Chicago.

She continued her 4-H membership at the University of Arkansas and became the president of the Girls’ 4-H House as a freshman.
