Scope and Content Note

The collection includes correspondence, family papers, educational and military documents, artwork, photographs, albums, and artifacts related to Elsa Juhre Schmitz, an Arkansas nurse, and to her family. Much of the collection is personal correspondence between Elsa Juhre Schmitz, her mother, Vera Smith Juhre, and her two brothers, Charles Carr Juhre, and Heston Juhre, from 1913 to 1957. Also included in the collection are materials documenting Schmitz's nursing career and her military service in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II. Additionally, the collection contains various small pieces of Vera Smith Juhre's artwork, photographs, and photo albums.

Biographical Note

Elsa Juhre Schmitz was born March 1, 1915 in Rogers, Benton County, Arkansas. Her parents, Erwin and Vera Juhre, owned Juhre Meat Market on the corner of Second and Walnut in Rogers, Arkansas. She graduated from Rogers High School, and continued her education in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at the Columbia School of Nursing, where she received her degree on September 11, 1935. Schmitz worked as a nurse at Ripon College, Wisconsin; St. Louis, Missouri; Colorado Springs, Colorado, and in public health in Arkansas. Schmitz was working in New York City at the onset of World War II. Schmitz enlisted in the United States Army Nurses Corps and was transferred throughout the course of her military career to various places in the United States as well as the South Pacific. During her military service, 1941-1945, Schmitz rose to the ranks of First Lieutenant.

Acquisition Information

The Elsa Juhre Schmitz Papers were donated to the Special Collections Department, University of Arkansas Libraries, on July 1, 2007 by Elsa Juhre Schmitz. Additional materials were donated by Schmitz's family, through Ellen Compton, on June 29, 2018.

Additional materials related to Elsa Juhre Schmitz and to the Juhre family are held by the Rogers Historical Museum in Rogers, Arkansas.

Processed by Krista Jones; completed in June 2008. An additional donation of materials (Box 7, Item 7, and Box 8) was incorporated into the collection by Katrina Windon in November 2021.
