Dora Dean was born February 4, 1898, in the Black Oak community in Washington County, Arkansas, the daughter of Wiley Durham and Mary Elizabeth Parker Dean. Dora graduated from Fayetteville City Hospital in 1921 and Barnes Hospital in St. Louis in 1922 as a registered nurse. She was a public health nurse from 1925 to 1933, when she established the organization Child Welfare of Washington County and Northwest Arkansas. She was a social worker from 1936 to 1966. Dean was a recipient of the Golden Deeds Award in 1957, and a Patroness member of the Sigma Omicron Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota.
