Biographical Note

The church organized in Izard County, Arkansas in 1926 as the White River Cumberland Presbyterian Church, a member of the Arkansas Presbytery. The first recorded minutes of the collection are from a meeting held June 15, 1831. Services were held at campground areas, in schools, in church member's homes, and in their places of business. The ruling elders at the time were Robert Strain, Robert McCamy, and Jarret Wood. The primary minister mentioned throughout the minutes was Andrew Buchanan but after his death, visiting Reverends William McMillan and J. F. King from the Presbytery were sent to moderate church affairs.

The area of origin for the White River Presbyterian Church congregation became the township of Mt. Olive. The town developed into an important commercial port on the White River after the Civil War. At the turn of the century, the Iron Mountain Railroad laid tracks through town which brought in a new commercial hub as the river landing activity faded away. Decades later, the railroads would become obsolete themselves when Sears and Roebuck catalog sales wiped out what was left of the business in town. The White River Presbyterian church building survived and Mt. Olive was left on the active role of churches in the 1960s. Members of the community led a fundraiser to revitalize the church in 1979. The building was nominated for addition to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
