Scope and Content Note

The memoir is by two of Kimpel's former students, Johnny and Susan Wink, both of whom received Ph.D.'s under the tutelage of Kimpel. The memoir includes general biographical materials on Kimpel as well as recollections of the authors' experiences with him. It also includes a section on Kimpel's ancestors.

Biographical Note

Ben Kimpel was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas, in 1915. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, and afterward attended Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he completed a bachelor's degree in 1937 and a master's degree in 1939. He received his Ph.D. in American literature from the University of North Carolina in 1942. From 1942 to 1946 he served in the U.S. Army, and from 1946 to 1951 with the State Department in Austria. In 1952 he joined the faculty of the English Department of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where he remained until his death in 1983. He is buried in Forest Park Cemetery in Fort Smith.
