Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of a diary and a partial hand-written transcription of the diary concerning the Officer's time in Arkansas.

Entries in the diary are fairly brief usually stating location, weather conditions, the well being of the Officer and his soldiers, and whether the chaplain was preaching or not. Much of what is written concerns the Officer's time spent fighting and marching in Arkansas (Batesville, Jacksonport, and Helena areas).

Biographical Note

The diary was written by an unknown Union Officer (possibly a Captain or Lieutenant) during the Civil War, and provides an account of his time with the Thirteenth Illinois Infantry Regiment from January 1862 to January 1863. Known as "Fremont's Grey Hounds," the regiment was mustered into Federal service on May 24, 1861. The capture of Fort Hindman at Arkansas Post in January 1863, was one of the actions the regiment participated in while in the state. The Thirteenth was mustered out of service in 1864.

The Thirteenth Illinois Regiment Diary was purchased by the Special Collections Department, University of Arkansas Libraries, on March 25, 2009 from Charles Apfelbaum of Watchung, New Jersey.
