Biographical Note

Frederick W. Letsch was born in Red Wing, Minnesota in 1856. Scant information exists on Letsch’s early life. What is known is that Letsch became a farmer, moved to Illinois and was active in his local farm mutual. In Illinois, Letsch married a woman two years younger than him, Helena Ehriech on April 30, 1877. Together they had ten children: Walter, Clara, Milo, Lillie, Fredrick, Raymond, Sidney, Dempsey, June, and Alice. Both Sidney and Dempsey were sent overseas to fight in World War I. After moving the family to Webster County, Missouri and organizing the Webster County Farmers Mutual, Letsch and his family moved to Fayetteville, Washington County, Arkansas. While there, he helped to establish the Washington County Farmers Mutual, the Northwest Arkansas Tornado Insurance Company, and the Arkansas State Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, which he served as president until his death on April 8, 1929.
