Biographical Note

The Davis Family has played an important role in Arkansas history. Jeff Davis served as Attorney General, Governor, and U.S. Senator for Arkansas during his political career from 1898 to 1913. Born on May 6, 1862 in Rocky Comfort, Missouri, he moved with his parents to Dover, Pope County, Arkansas and later Russellville, Pope County, Arkansas. He served in the U.S. Senate until his death on January 3, 1913. His son, also named Jeff Davis, was born on January 22, 1896 and died on February 1, 1979. He carried on the legal tradition by receiving a law degree from Harvard University which brought him to work in Monsanto Companys Lion Oil Division as General Attorney and Vice President in El Dorado, Union County, Arkansas. He retired from the oil industry in 1961 to devote more time to the practice of law. He received many awards for his skill as a trial lawyer including being named the Outstanding Lawyer of the year in 1965 by the Arkansas Bar Association. His son, Jeff Davis Jr., further carried on the family tradition by serving as an assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas from 1963-1966 and later opening his own law firm in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas.
