Biographical Note

Rupert Taylor was born on August 13, 1883, in Corning, Clay County, Arkansas. He graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1903, and received a master's degree from the same institution in 1906. During his time in the graduate program, he taught English in the Prepatory School at the University of Arkansas. He earned a doctorate from Columbia University in 1911. Taylor served during World War I in the Adjutant General Corps and in the American Embassy in Rome. He later ran the Bureau of Economics for Western Europe for U.S. Intelligence. From 1921-1926, Taylor served as dean of the faculty and head of the English Department at Auburn University. Taylor joined the faculty at Clemson University in 1927 and is credited with starting the first course on Shakespeare there. He retired from Clemson in 1957, and died on January 17, 1964, in Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, Arkansas.
