Scope and Content Note

Materials in the collection include correspondence, newspaper clippings, class notes, bank documents, architectural blueprints, portraits, and miscellaneous other materials. Biographical Note

The Williamses were an early pioneer family in Madison County, having originally come from Alabama. They settled in War Eagle, Madison County, Arkansas, and on April 15, 1907, Alpha (“Alphie”) Williams was born, the youngest of eight children and the only girl. In 1911, Alpha’s immediate family moved about 45 miles south to the St. Paul, Madison County area.

Although Alpha Williams traveled a great deal – she attended the University of Arkansas (1933-1937); she took graduate courses at the University of Chicago’s School of Social Service Administration (1940-1941); and she worked as rural social worker in southern Indiana, Missouri, and Arkansas – she retained her interest in the family land near St. Paul. Along with her two surviving brothers, Earl and Mack, she expanded her holdings until they totaled well over 500 acres. Her brother Earl died in World War II and her brother Mack died in the 1960s.

Alpha Williams never married, and upon her death of cancer on June 7, 1993 she willed the property to the Ozark Highlands Trail Association.
