Scope and Content Note

This collection contains local organizational records including meeting minutes, newsletters, membership information, trustee information from the national organization, photographs and videotapes. Of particular note are materials in the Centennial Planning Folders related to the effort spearheaded by Bob Callans which resulted in the issuance of the Fredrick Law Olmsted U.S. Postage commemorative stamp.

Biographical Note

The Arkansas Chapter of American Society of Landscape Architects was established in 1983 as the numbers of landscape designers in the state increased. From 1957 to 1977 Arkansas existed as a Section of the Southwest Chapter of the ASLA which also included Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Mississippi. In 1977-1983 it became a section of the Louisiana/Arkansas Chapter. In the 1970s the profession of landscape architecture made significant strides in Arkansas. In 1976, Title Act_A.C.A.17-36 established a Board to develop the criteria for licensure in the state.. The University of Arkansas had initiated a Landscape Architecture degree program in the School of Architecture in 1975. 1980 the program gained its first three graduates. By 1985 members of the profession and the University faculty had worked to acquire incorporation for the Arkansas Chapter of American Society of Landscape Architects. Arrangement of the Papers

Boxes 1 and 2 contain primarily organization records such as correspondence and meeting minutes in their original order. The remaining materials are organized chronologically by type of materials. Box 3 contains similar organizational materials. Box 4 contains material related to national leadership meetings followed by publications. Box 5 contains materials related to the ASLA Centennial, followed by professional awards related materials. Box 6 and 7 contain videotapes and CD/DVDs. OV Folder 1 contains oversize certificates and posters.

Acquisition Information

The Arkansas Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects was donated to the Special Collections Department by Travis Brooks, Trustee of Arkansas Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects on November 30, 2011. Additional materials were donated by Bob Callans on September 7, 2015.
