Materials include correspondence, mostly summons from various Confederate States Army commanders, generals, and sergeants. This collection includes correspondence from William J. Hardee (3), T.H. Bradley (1), H.T. Hodnett (1), D.G. White (3), J.A. Leavy (1), A.L. Breysacker (1), W.W. Boyd (1),and C.E. Michel (2).

Biographical Note

J.E. Nagle was mustered into the Confederate States Army in July of 1861 when he offered his services to the Arkansas State Militia as a surgeon. During the beginning of the Civil War, he was appointed as the commander of the hospital in Pocahontas, Randolph County, Arkansas by Major General William J. Hardee. Throughout the war, he often followed General Hardee or his commands throughout the South. He was sent to serve in Jeff Thompson's expedition into Missouri, the 6th Kentucky Cavalry, and the 33rd Alabama Infantry. Towards the end of the Civil War he was appointed as the commander of the Confederate Hospital in Graysville, Georgia. Besides these documents, not much else is known about Dr. J.E. Nagle.
