Scope and Content Note
This collection documents the research conducted by Erma Van Dixon, a Peace Corps volunteer, in Fiji from December 1990 to June 1992. The collection is comprised of a research paper written by Van Dixon; project letters discussing details of cost and setting up interviews; interview questionnaires; copied pages from books used as background research; books related to plants as medicine; and photographs of medicinal plants and folk medicine preparation. Van Dixon conducted interviews with approximately 40 folk medicine practitioners in Fiji, asking interviewees questions about their background and training. Van Dixon’s research also provides an overview of specific folk medicines and treatments.

Biographical Note
Erma Van Dixon was a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in the 1990s. As a part of Van Dixon’s Peace Corps assignment, she participated in a research project in collaboration with the National Committee for Traditional Medicine in Fiji and Dr. B.R. Sainath, a professor in the Department of Pharmacology, Fiji School of Medicine. Van Dixon’s interest in the project came from her medical background as a retired nurse.
